Our hot water tank is a power hog (oink, oink)

Since the last post I’ve added monitoring of the electrical consumption of our hot water tank.

The blue bars in the above chart show our total residential power consumption and the orange bars that are layered on top show what the hot water tank is doing.  This is my first complete day of water tank readings so they may not be typical, but they do confirm my inital feeling; the hot water tank accounted for about half of our electrical consumption on Monday, April 6, 2015.

I still find myself amazed at all the electricity going into the hot water tank!

Upcoming posts:

  • How can I better monitor power consumption in the earthship? I’d like to monitor more appliances individually and I’d like to be sure I’m getting accurate results of my monitoring.
  • Can we build an affordable solar hot water system to get this power monkey off our backs?

    Hi Chris,

This only shows that everyone needs hot water in everyday use.
Very informative, Thank you, please keep on posting.

Sandra and Chris

Welcome to our homesteading adventure in south central BC, Canada! In 2009 we started building an earthship in Darfield. We moved in three and a half years later. Now that the biggest jobs are finished we are having fun homesteading in a modern world. Join us for discussions about finishing the earthship, food preservation, beekeeping, livestock, permaculture and how we interact with technology. It's all about simple living and stewardship of the land without deprivation. Together with our three teenagers we're learning as we go.
